RESOLVE Conference in Milevsko – Czech Republic

Loendersloot International remains popular as a speaker on mobility conferences across Europe. Recently, we were invited to do a presentation on a mobility conference in the Czech Republic. It was organised as part of the Resolve Project of the European Union, which adresses the issues of declining retail sectors and the increasing need to reduce CO2. The conference was held in the town of Milevsko, just south of Prague.

The conference had a special focus on children in relation to street transformation. In our presentation, Ruben Loendersloot explained the key role of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) as a tool to achieve liveable streets for all. He explained that SUMP is not just about infrastructure, but also about mindsets. It is important that not only mobility experts are involved in SUMP, but a wide range of stakeholders and users. Support should be found bottom-up to increase chances of success.

We also ran a workshop about safe streets. In this workshop, delegates were invited to actively analyse their area on safe routes to school and safe school surroundings. Delegates were also inspired to think beyond the obvious commuting routes. How do people live in their area? How do they experience culture, arts and sports and how do they socialise? What role plays mobility in this?

Both our presentation and workshop fitted in well with the other activities of the conference. Besides Loendersloot International, presentations and workshops were held by Transport for Greater Manchester and Växjö municipality, reknown in Sweden for its environmental action.
